Picking a fireplace isn’t a one-model decision. For most residential projects, I end up comparing the Valor Portrait against a traditional gas insert. Not because they’re direct alternatives in every room—but because they represent two very different approaches to the building envelope. I’ve installed, repaired, and replaced both. The deciding factors usually have nothing to do with flame appearance. They’re about gas safety, maintenance, and roof details.

2. Gas Safety: Check Valves Tell the Real Story

Modern fireplace systems aren’t just logs and a burner. A proper gas train with pressure regulation, an accessible shut-off, and a correctly installed check valve is what separates a safe install from a risky one. Traditional inserts often rely on whatever gas line already exists. Newer Valor installations usually provide a cleaner valve access panel, but only if the installing plumber actually includes the check valve and verifies the flow direction.

I assumed a check valve was already in place on one job. I didn’t verify. Turns out the valve was installed backwards, and the fireplace’s flow switch short-cycled twice before the client called me. Traditional inserts are almost always tied to an existing masonry chimney or a factory-built chase. That’s more work at the roof, but it also gives you control over details you don’t get with an older chimney.

For the roof side, keep a foil shaver in the truck. If you’re cutting foil-faced polyiso around the fireplace chase, a standard utility knife can snag and tear the facing. A foil shaver—the type with a thin cutting edge that shaves the foil without crushing the rigid foam—makes a cleaner cut around vent pipe flashings. It’s one of those tools that looks unnecessary until you’re trimming your third layer in the sun.

The counterintuitive part is this: a new roof penetration is often more reliable than an old chimney. When you build the chase and flashing yourself, you can inspect every layer. With existing masonry, you’re trusting work that may be decades old and unsealed. That’s why I tell clients that the roof detail matters as much as the fireplace’s interior styling.

5. The Verdict: What I’d Choose and Why

Choose the Valor Portrait when the project is a new build or a major remodel and the interior design deserves a real focal point. The visual payoff is worth the extra roof and maintenance work—but only if the gas supply is verified with a check valve and the glass track cleaning is part of the handover.

Choose a traditional gas insert when the existing chimney is in good shape, the budget is tighter, or the client simply wants a fireplace that feels like it has always been there. Modern inserts are still efficient, safe, and much easier to service in many old structures.

The industry is evolving. What was best practice in 2020—treating a fireplace as just a hole in the wall—doesn’t match how today’s linear gas fireplaces perform. The fundamentals haven’t changed: gas safety, ventilation, and durable installation details. The execution has. And that’s exactly why the conversation has to go beyond the flame.
