How to Repair a Screen Door: A 7-Step Checklist That Actually Works

If you've ever had a screen door tear two hours before a cookout, you know that exact feeling. It's a small repair, but it's on a deadline. The good news? Step 6: Lay in the screen and press the spline

Start in the middle of one of the long sides. Center the screen, then press the spline into the channel using the convex side of the spline roller. Work from the middle toward the corners. Leave the corners for last. This pulls the screen tight from both directions.

Don't force the spline with a screwdriver. It will slice the screen. And don't stretch the screen like a trampoline—it should be taut, not distorted. If you see the mesh pattern stretching around the frame, you're pulling too hard.

Once the spline is fully seated in the channel, trim the screen with a sharp utility knife. Hold the blade flat against the frame and cut along the outside edge of the spline. A new blade is worth it. I've fought a dull blade and accidentally torn the screen at the corner. Not fun.

Step 7: Reinstall the door and reattach the door handle

If the latch doesn't align, loosen the strike plate screws, move it slightly, and tighten again. This is the same door handle advice from Step 2, but now you're adjusting the latch to the actual door position after the screen install.

Reattach the door handle if you removed it. Tighten the screws in a cross pattern and don't go crazy. On most doors, 'just snug plus a quarter-turn' is enough. Over-tightening can compress the latch mechanism or bind the frame.
